Announcement: Akiko Ono Becomes Partner at Shades of Green
We are delighted to announce that Akiko Ono has become a Partner at Shades of Green Landscape Architecture.
Akiko has been an integral part of our studio for many years, shaping projects with her thoughtful design approach, technical expertise, and deep respect for the living landscape. With over twenty years of professional experience as a practicing landscape architect, Akiko has led the design and construction of numerous award-winning projects throughout the United States and Asia — from public parks and urban plazas to college and corporate campuses.
At Shades of Green, Akiko has played a central role in leading many of our most meaningful public and residential projects, including Hamlin School, St. Ignatius College Preparatory School, Logan Apartments in Berkeley, and DJ Sangh Temple, as well as a number of private gardens across the San Francisco Bay Area.
Originally from Japan, Akiko holds degrees in Comparative Cultures and Architectural History and brings a distinct cross-cultural lens to her work. She pursues landscape architecture as a medium for working “in-between” — between theory and practice, nature and culture, Japanese and non-Japanese traditions, and between the detailed and the conceptual. Her design philosophy embraces the landscape as a realm that reflects the full circle of life — birth, growth, and even decay — honoring both natural and human cycles.
We are thrilled to welcome Akiko into this new leadership role as we continue to evolve our practice, deepen our creative collaborations, and design landscapes that inspire connection, beauty, and care for the living world.
