Feeling Like a Kid Again: Exploring Nature-Based Playground Design

Our founder, Ive Haugeland, recently returned from Toronto, Ontario, inspired by the power of play and feeling like a kid again. Invited by Dave Bang Associates, she joined a whirlwind playground tour showcasing the innovative work of Earthscape, a leader in nature-based playground design. Alongside a group of landscape architects from across the United States, she spent several days climbing, exploring, and experiencing some of the region’s most creative play environments firsthand.

Locally known for their award-winning installation at the Presidio Tunnel Tops, Earthscape’s design philosophy is based on creating a strong sense of place. By using natural materials, they create sustainable spaces that foster lasting connections to nature, community, and to the joy of play. Their designs also promote open-ended, inclusive play that encourages children of all ages (including big kids at heart) to take risks, build confidence, and connect with others.

Fearless Creativity

Ive was particularly impressed by Earthscape’s fearless creativity, craftsmanship and commitment to sustainability. Whether it’s a custom design or a standard unit, Earthscape isn’t afraid of trying unique ideas. Each playground is handcrafted using durable, rot-resistant wood species such as Robinia and white oak. The company prioritizes local sourcing and often incorporates fallen trees into playground edging and custom site details. Reflecting a deep commitment to environmental stewardship, Earthscape’s founder, who is now retired, continues the tradition of planting multiple trees for every one that is harvested.
