Shades of Green Landscape Architecture

In the Redwoods

Located in a tranquil, forested canyon of Mill Valley, the project site is a steep hillside with over 100 feet of grade change. Working with the site’s vertical terrain, the primary design intent was to create a series of usable outdoor spaces for an active family that enhance and integrate the natural landscape with its indoor living spaces.

Extending from the main level of the house are outdoor spaces in a forested area. We selected materials and a planting palette that do well under the redwoods and in the surrounding environment, as well as complement the modern architecture of the renovated home.

Complementing the existing entrance stair that winds through the redwoods, we created geometric planting beds that prevent erosion and create a lush understory planting at the entrance of the house.

A cedar soaking hot tub is tucked in a private area on the hillside, while an artificial lawn used for playing soccer is nestled beneath the trees.
